Monthly Tropical Weather Summary
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
800 AM PDT Tue Sep 1 2020

For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude:

Tropical cyclone activity in the eastern North Pacific basin during
the month of August was above average in terms of the number of
named storms that formed. During the month, six tropical cyclones
formed, with five of these becoming named storms. Only two of these
storms, however, reached hurricane strength, with Hurricane
Genevieve becoming the second major hurricane in the basin during
the 2020 hurricane season. Based on a 30-year (1981-2010)
climatology, three to four named storms typically form in the basin
in August, with two of those storms becoming hurricanes and one
reaching major hurricane intensity.

In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the
strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, activity
in the basin so far in 2020 is about 30 percent below average.

Reports on individual cyclones, when completed, are available at
the National Hurricane Center website at:
www.hurricanes.gov/data/tcr/index.php?season=2020&basin=epac
