Monthly Tropical Weather Summary

For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude:

Tropical cyclone activity in the eastern North Pacific basin during 
the month of August was above average in terms of the number of 
named storms that formed.  During the month, six tropical cyclones 
formed, with five of these becoming named storms. Only two of these 
storms, however, reached hurricane strength, with Hurricane 
Genevieve becoming the second major hurricane in the basin during 
the 2020 hurricane season.  Based on a 30-year (1981-2010) 
climatology, three to four named storms typically form in the basin 
in August, with two of those storms becoming hurricanes and one 
reaching major hurricane intensity. 

In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the 
strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, activity 
in the basin so far in 2020 is about 30 percent below average.
